I am also curious why salaries in the EU for product & UX (and eng, probably) are quite low compared to Singapore or other parts of the world. I think European countries are trapped in the fact they are proud about on "we have a good welfare system and you don't need as much disposable income" or "we are so cultured that we have unlimited leave and good work-life balance also you can bike and here's our great public transportation system and look we have so many people trying to move here."Also when I interviewed with an Estonian company I know for a fact that they mention about "yeah, our living cost is low" — but okay, I don't see so much difference even with Germany or the Netherlands in terms of salary offering.Despite offering a fairly low salary/compensation, EU is very hard to get thru, in terms of job offers and relocations. They're not very immigration-friendly.Then, you still need to learn a third language whatever it is.

Money can’t buy all those things you mentioned regardless how much you earn, if the society don’t have them. That’s why, ppl still go to Europe. I don’t think it’s fair to call out ppl as “trapped” and “proud” in a negative way for wanting bike lanes and good life. Also , SG and the US are abnormal, not the other way around.

I wrote aposton LinkedIn the other day about EU-based job opportunities, and how I agree on a post saying that EU-based salaries are quite low... and there is one response refuting it. I’d like to further discuss on this blog. Read more:

Completely agree. In the case of Slack, channels are there and people still DM me with others even when we’re in a channel. Why the need to keep things private? Isn’t transparency important?

"It's a game changer" — well, maybe I don't want to change the game."It's the next big thing" — well, maybe I'm good with the next normal thing."It's the growth mindset" — well, maybe there is a different way or idea of growing.

I have been in situations when I felt really confused and frustrated about my work. Either I was too ambitious, or maybe thinking I had it all. Thinking about everyone else's achievements often belittled me. However, at some points in my career, I felt a sense of contentment. When I thought I had enough to not want more (be it position, title, or money), but also felt comfortable enough to say I am thankful I don't have less. But it’s also not to say I don’t want growth. In fact, it is a zone that I can say I am comfortable enough to try to grow.Is it comfort zone? No. Is it ikigai? Also no.This is what I call the Goldilocks zone. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty changed my perspectives about life and work. Walter Mitty’s story is a manifestation of any 9-to-5 worker's life. Those being the cogs in the machines, but still striving for perfection and looking for meaning out of their routines. Most of us are there, or at least there at some point in our life.At its surface, UX design looks and is often perceived as just "another team"... but really, it is about understanding user needs and crafting solutions that not only address those needs but also evoke positive emotions. We strive to design experiences that surprise and delight, that leave a lasting impression. In a way, we are experience architects, building bridges between the ordinary and the extraordinary.Mitty's yearning for adventure mirrors the UX designer's constant push for innovation. We don't settle for the status quo; we challenge assumptions and explore uncharted territories. Just as Mitty ventured beyond his desk job to capture the essence of life through his curation, UX designers leverage their skills to craft interfaces that don't just function, they inspire. However, along the way, our efforts are often not being being recognised or rewarded. We face harsh realities of business and conflicting interests that don’t always side to innovation and user experience. Operationally, on a day-to-day basis, we can feel very isolated, sometimes bullied, and exploited. What other lessons can we learn from this wonderful movie? Read more here. 👇

We are all guilty of this. Anyone who has worked in a team will at some point surrender to urgency culture, whether as an initiator or recipient. We do this because of "business reasons" or simply because we think our interest (be it business, product, UX, engineering, marketing or else) is of the utmost importance at that very time compared to others. Not only about work — it also transcends everyday life. Whatsapp, Telegram, and even phone calls (I dread them), all contribute to us having to be always on all the time and always be responding. Especially bad is when people just say "hi" to you without any context whatsoever, and expect you to respond to it immediately. When you expect people to respond to your needs and wants super urgently like it's their own urgency. "Your urgency does not translate urgency on my side," some people say. Which rings true and should be true always.I think at this point what we can do is to reject this culture of urgency from time to time, even when it comes at a cost of us not being called a "good teammate" or a "good employee". We set the tone of our own culture.https://lnkd.in/gk5RznMF

Slack is the worst way to communicate, it lacks context and emotion.Meetings are long-winding and harmful to introverts. Extrovert leaders scream their opinions.Emails… people don’t read ‘em.Docs… wait let me try to dig and find it!JIRA… takes ages to load.Figma… nobody understands it except designers trying to shoe-shine their documentation.
