City, county snow-removal funds end '95 over budget By MARK SCARBOROUGH Tribune Staff Writer Wisconsin Rapids spent about $500,000 on snow and ice removal in 1995, although exact figures are still unknown, according to Jim Borski, public works superintendent.

The city had budgeted $441,090 for the work and transferred an additional $65,000 to the snow removal account later in the year, he said. "We'll probably be over (budget), but not by a lot." At the Wood County Highway Department, superintendent Dave Krekowski also reported a deficit in the snow removal account. The county budgeted $370,000 for 1995 work but spent about $410,000, he said. Borski said the city budgeted $454,370 for snow and ice removal this year. "We haven't had to use much of this money yet in 1996," he said Friday.

"Hopefully, January will be! a dry month, like it normally is. If we can get through the later part of the winter season without a lot of snow, that will give us a break." If another major snowfall hits Wisconsin Rapids, snow banks on 8th Street South and Grand Avenue will have to be dealt with by city street crews in what probably would be an expensive operation, Borski said. "The snow banks are about as high as we can let them get without narrowing the traffic lanes," he said.

"So, if we have another big snowfall, we'll have to remove some of that accumulated snow. That would mean working at night, which would be the best time to do that work.
